5 Types Of Software To Keep You Safe Online

There is a lot of software available to keep you safe online. Even better, many of them are free for the most basic version which gives you a good chance to test whether they suit your needs before shelling out money.

Anti-Virus software

This is essential, and most PC’s will ship with Windows Security, but it’s worth going a bit further and adding your own security too.

Password Manager

Secure, original passwords are probably the best thing you can do to keep yourself safe online. But it’s impossible to remember all the passwords you need. A password manager will help you create secure passwords, and remember them so you don’t have to.

VPN

A VPN is essential if you regularly access public networks. They can also be beneficial at home too. As part of your internet privacy toolkit, they limit what your ISP can track. They’re also really useful when you want to watch a geoblocked video.

Authenticator App

An authenticator app is used for 2-factor authentication. It generates a secure code that you can use to log into a website or program. It’s more secure than using SMS for 2 Factor login as someone actually needs your phone to get the code, whereas SMS access can be hacked.

Privacy Tools

There are a lot of privacy tools available – and they all work to limit the amount of information websites can track online. At the very least, an Adblocker is useful. Other useful tools are TOR a secure browser, Brave a secure, fast and private browser and Ghostery, an anti-tracking tool.

There are 5 types of software to keep you safe online. While I’d recommend you use all of them, you don’t have to start all at once. The order I’ve listed them is the order I’d recommend introducing them into your day to day computer (and mobile device) use.
