Google is one of many companies who are offering two-step verification on accounts. The benefit of two step verification is that in order to log into your account, hackers would need to have your mobile phone as well as your password.
Then just follow the steps below to activate 2 step verification
- Click EDIT to enable 2 step verification
- Google sends a text to your phone with you verification code
- Enter code when requested
- If you’re the only person who uses the computer, select Trust this computer so you don’t have to log in EVERY time. Don’t do this on a public computer
- Confirm
- If you have 3rd party apps you may have to create additional passwords. It’s an ideal time to review what apps you have given access to and only approve apps you currently use.
- Enter the application specific passwords where required. Google will tell you which apps need it, but the most important ones are probably your phone, tablet, Google Calendar Sync, Outlook, Chat applications
Admittedly, it does take a little work to get this all set up, but it’s totally worthwhile and really not a problem once it is in operation. I’d also recommend taking the option Google offers you and print out a list of 10 backup codes to keep in a safe place (your wallet, etc) in case you lose your phone or have some other problem accessing the code via SMS.
Also, just a reminder that your Google password should not be the same as other passwords, you should use a separate password for each online service you use.
The most important thing to remember is that keeping your information secure is your responsibility. Don’t expect the programs you use to deal with it – they’ll do their best to be secure, but the only way to be certain to keep your information secure online is to make sure you take every precaution as well.
