5 Things to Help You Stay Healthy at Your Desk

Working at a desk day after day can be really bad for your health.  Not only can you develop problems from both the lack of movement and repetitious movements,  you are also susceptible to eye problems, decreasing fitness, unhealthy atmosphere and stress.

Fortunately, keeping on top of any existing problems, and preventing new issues is relatively easy.  You just need to remember to:

Take breaks, stretch
Every now and then get up and have a quick walk around the office.  Stretch while you’re at your desk, if you Google “exercise at your desk” you’ll find lots of exercise routines you can do at your desk, from the outlandish and extreme to discrete things you can do while you work or are on the phone.  Stretching and breaking the routines of repetitive movements are probably the best things you can do to keep yourself fit and healthy at work.

Set up your desk properly
An ergonomic desk setup is important. Ergonomics Info has a lot of great information on desk setup (including the image below) at http://www.ergonomics-info.com/ergonomic-computer-desk.html

Look away
It’s important to look away from your computer screen every now and then.  When you take a break, make sure you don’t spend it looking at your computer/laptop/tablet/phone screen instead, and

Eat & drink healthily
That means have healthy snacks on hand, and drink plenty of water.  Don’t be tempted to skip breaks and eat at the desk.  Going out for a quick walk, even if it is just to buy lunch will improve your health in every way, just make sure that whatever you get for lunch has at least some health value.

Clean and tidy
Keep your desk and surrounds clean and tidy.  It’s a great idea to have some items to personalise your space, but use folders and document trays to keep paperwork organised.  Have as much clear space on your desk as possible and make sure it’s not greasy, sticky, covered in crumbs etc.  Not only does it stop pests, but a clean & tidy workspace is less distracting than an untidy desk.

If you take care of all these things, you’ll find you feel healthier and suffer from less stress as physical aches and pains have less impact.

Note that if you do suffer any health concerns or lasting pain, you need to see your doctor and have it investigated.  Healthy habits only help when you take full control of your health and that includes consulting health professionals when needed.
